Accident & Emergency

The Accident and Emergency Department (AED) at the Lorn and Islands Hospital is open on a 24/7 basis. It is staffed by a team of 14 qualified nurses who are supported by medical /surgical Consultants and junior doctors.

All patients that arrive at the department will be seen and triaged by a nurse, who will then advise which service from the list below best suits the patient’s needs.

The services provided are:

MINOR INJURIES:

This service is manned by 4 Advanced Nurse Practitioners, who have undertaken extended training to equip them with the knowledge and skills to see, assess, diagnose, treat or refer patients presented with undifferentiated diagnoses.

If you have sustained an injury this is the service you will be referred to.

EMERGENCY CARE:

This service is available to all who have a condition requiring emergency care such as chest pain, abdominal pain or difficulty breathing etc. The care is provided by a team of junior doctors who are supported by medical / surgical Consultants and a team of nurses.

NHS24 / OUT OF HOURS GP SERVICE:

This service is not part of the Accident and Emergency department but is located in a clinic room adjacent to it.

If the AED staff refer you here, they will offer you the use of a telephone to contact this service or you can decide to go home to do this.

The NHS24 service is available when your General Practice is closed. They can be accessed by calling 08454 24 24 24 or 111.
