Anaesthesia

DEPARTMENT OF ANAESTHESIA

Anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgery is provided by two full time consultants, Dr Jason Davies and Dr David Robinson. Dr Colin Wilson, a specialist anaesthetist, who combines hospital duties with general practice and work in hyperbaric medicine, completes the team. Being part of a friendly, supportive unit adds to the enjoyment of living and working in a splendid location.

As well as providing anaesthesia for operations, the anaesthesia doctors are often involved in the high dependency unit and in caring for severely ill adults and children requiring transfer to an urban centre for intensive care.  The consultants provide anaesthesia at the Argyll and Bute Hospital in Lochgilphead when required.

The chronic pain service, led by Dr Davies with the help of a specialist pain nurse, Audrey Paterson, provides clinics in Oban, Lochgilphead and Campbeltown.  Chronic pain treatment procedures are performed in Oban.

Teaching and training are important – both consultants regularly instruct on courses for hospital staff and the anaesthesia training module is a popular choice for visiting medical students, both from the UK and abroad.

Although small, the department takes pride in matching or exceeding standards of care to be found elsewhere.  Equipment and training are kept updated to meet best practice guidelines.
