Medical Department

MEDICAL STAFF
The doctors in the medical department

There are three consultant physicians in the medical department who work with an associate specialist and five trainees. The physicians are all trained in general medicine but each have some speciality experience. They work together as part of the bigger team to give the best care they can to the patients.

A typical day starts with morning handover followed by a ward round. There are emergencies to be seen and clinics to do. Some clinics are out of town so each physician is used to looking after each other’s patients when necessary. Everyone is involved in teaching, whether that’s trainees or each other. There is a robust morbidity and mortality meeting each month where we discuss anything that might have gone better.

The department welcomes medical students year round. Mostly these are fourth year medical students from Dundee University.

Contacting us is relatively easy. Simply phone the hospital and ask to speak to the consultant on call. If you know which consultant you want, their secretary will help you make contact. If you are a GP and simply want to admit a patient then ask to speak to the junior doctor on call for medicine.
