Radiology

The Radiology Department is situated next to Accident and Emergency, to the left of the main hospital entrance. The following services are offered:

Plain X-ray

  • Accident & Emergency and in-patient service – 24 hour
  • GP and Clinic referrals – a walk-in service is offered Mon, Thur, Fri 9.30-4
  • Dental service – including OPT and cephalometry, Mon & Fri 9.30-4

Ultrasound

  • General abdominal, gynaecological, ENT, musculoskeletal, vascular and venous scanning by appointment.
  • Emergency examinations by discussion with duty radiologist/ultrasonographer.
  • Ultrasound-guided biopsies and procedures.

Computerised Tomography

  • General CT examinations by appointment.
  • GP referrals for head CT, and other examinations by discussion with the radiologist.
  • Chest, abdominal and bone biopsy.

Screening and Interventional Procedures

GP referrals for barium swallow and meal. Other examinations referred from clinic include:

  • Contrast enema
  • Esophageal, ureteric and colonic stenting
  • Venous access including peripherally inserted central catheters
  • Varicocoele and ovarian vein embolization
  • Drainage procedures

The Consultant Radiologists are available for advice on appropriate imaging strategies for patients, or to discuss specific clinical cases with General Practitioners.  Dr Brooks has special interests in head and neck, and oncological imaging, Dr Thorpe in musculoskeletal, vascular and interventional radiology.

We recognise that the department serves a wide geographical area and for many patients travel to Oban is not straightforward. We will do our best to accommodate you with an appointment to fit in with ferry/flight times.  Please telephone the office for advice.
