STROKE SERVICES

Scotland has one of the highest rates of stroke. It is the 3rd commonest cause of death and chronic adult disability. The stroke service at Lorn and Islands Hospital ensures immediate and ongoing treatment for people who have had a stroke. Stroke beds are situated in Ward I, where patients receive acute care and rehabilitation as appropriate. The stroke team comprises a consultant with an interest in stroke, specialist nurse, nursing staff, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, social worker, dietician and other appropriate team members. Thrombolysis (“clot-busting”) is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is access to a TIA (mini stroke) clinic twice a week (Monday am and Thursday pm). These clinics prevent unnecessary hospital admission, give rapid access to expert advice and appropriate tests, and ensure that secondary prevention is commenced to reduce the risk of further stroke events. Specialist post-hospital support is provided by members of the team based in Oban and the community teams in Mid Argyll, Kintyre and the islands.
